The proposal for the building is to provide self-contained residence suites for 76 students on the upper two levels, both sides of the corridor, and on one side of the corridor on the ground level, opposite the lounge and dining facility. Each suite, as shown in the picture from the proposed floor plan, will consist of a bedroom area, work area, closet space, and importantly, a three-piece washroom with shower, sink and toilet. No sharing of such facilities will be necessary, allowing each student to be independent at all times.
The wide hallways connecting the suites and running to both ends of the building will be “tree-lined” in keeping with the spirit of the local landscape and the partial focus of the Algonquin College system where forestry is one of its major programs. One side of the “street” will have cast iron chairs and small tables where students may meet and enjoy a beverage and chat or simply watch all go by – just as in Paris, France. Also another feature of the rural “Valley” and the need of its people to spend a little time just sitting and contemplating the day.
